Diploma or certificate
- Bachelor's: secondary school certificate (high school)
- Master's or PhD: higher education diploma
- All diplomas must have Apostille of The Hague and Portuguese translation
Language proficiency
- Portuguese is NOT required for English-taught programs
- For Portuguese-language programs: B1-B2 proficiency is generally sufficient
- Formal proficiency certificate not required in most cases
Admission exams
- Bachelor's: often requires entrance exams
- Master's: generally does NOT require exams, but spots may be limited and competitive

Step-by-step application process
The process can be done via consulate or directly in Portugal (for those already in the country).
Choose the academic program
Select the higher education program in Portugal that best suits your goals. Consider language of instruction, location, costs and international recognition.
Application and enrollment
Submit your application directly to the university with motivation letter, CV and apostilled diplomas. After approval, formalize enrollment and obtain the acceptance letter.
Documentation and NIF
Obtain the NIF (Tax Identification Number), take out mandatory health insurance and gather remaining documents: valid passport, criminal records, proof of €10,000 in bank and accommodation.
Via Consulate or directly in Portugal
Option 1: Apply for the D4 visa at the Portuguese consulate (60-90 days for analysis). Option 2: Enter as a tourist, enroll and apply for residency directly at AIMA, without a prior visa.
AIMA appointment
Attend AIMA for biometric collection and final documentation. Present enrollment, NIF, NISS, insurance, accommodation and financial proof.
Residence permit issuance
AIMA issues the residence card within up to 90 days. The initial permit is valid for 1 year (renewable), and can be extended for continuing studies, employment or job seeking.
